UK: Morley appoints two new fund managers to equities team

Morley Fund Management, one of the UK’s largest fund managers, has appointed Simon Jaffe and Mark Artherton to the Equity team as a UK institutional fund manager on the Value team and emerging markets fund manager respectively.

Morley Fund Management, one of the UK’s largest fund managers, has appointed Simon Jaffe and Mark Artherton to the Equity team as a UK institutional fund manager on the Value team and emerging markets fund manager respectively. Simon joins Morley from F&C Asset Management and Mark joins from Lansdowne Partners. This brings to seven the number of fund managers Morley has added to its equities team in as many months.

Morley’s head of equities, Niall Paul said: “This continues our strengthening of Morley’s equities team. There is real sense of momentum within the team and both Simon and Mark have the experience and expertise to significantly contribute to that.”

Simon Jaffe previously was a pan-European equity portfolio manager at F&C Asset Management. Prior to that he was at NPI Asset Management where he was assistant director and UK fund manager. Simon was a UK equity analyst at Morley Fund Management during 1997-1998.

Mark Artherton previously was a global emerging markets equities fund manager at Lansdowne Partners. Prior to that he was at Wells Capital Management where he was a senior EMEA equities analyst. Mark will be covering Global Emerging Market Equities and developing Morley’s product range in this area.

In December, Niall Paul refocused Morley’s equities business in order to instil higher conviction and more focused investment parameters within the firm’s active equity management teams. Specifically, he created a new Morley Value team, refocused Morley’s UK Equity and European Equity teams and moved the firm’s active US funds into a quant or index based approach. As part of this refocusing David Lis was promoted to head of UK equities and Rita Dhut was promoted to head of the Morley Value team. Morley is actively recruiting for the position of head of European equities.

The other five recently recruited high alpha UK fund managers are:

Richard Colwell was appointed in November and started in January. He comes from Credit Suisse where he managed the Growth & Income fund and the Credit Suisse Managed Assets OEIC. He has successfully run a number of segregated institutional pension funds for over four years with varying mandates.

Chris has managed the Framlington UK Growth Fund which delivered first quartile performance in 2005*.

Mervyn Douglas joined Morley in May from Legal and General Investment Management where he had been working as a fund manager since early 2005. He previously worked at Morley from November 2002 and was lead manager on the Norwich UK Equity Fund. Mervyn managed the LGIM Growth Trust Fund which delivered first decile performance in 2005*.

Ian Lancaster joined Morley in June from Progressive Alternative Investments Limited, where he managed the Elite MoneyGuru Income with Growth Unit Trust and Stockbridge – a small and mid cap equity long/short hedge fund. Prior to this he was head of investment at MG Capital plc and previously smaller company investment manager for General Accident. He brings 17 years’ fund management experience to the team and a very strong track record.

James Follows joined Morley in June and most recently worked alongside Ian Lancaster as assistant fund manager and has 16 years of fund management experience. Prior to Progressive Alternative Investments, James was head of research and assistant fund manager at MG Capital plc.
