Applications to join the Aviva Ballkids team at the Australian Open 2010 will open at 5pm today (23 March 2009) for boys and girls aged between 12 to 15 years.
According to Allan Griffiths, chief executive officer of Aviva, becoming an Aviva Ballkid is the opportunity of a lifetime. "Over the past five years of our sponsorship, the high level of interest has been evident in the thousands of boys and girls who have submitted their applications.
"Only 300 make the team each year, and while it is very competitive, it is a rewarding opportunity. Being an Aviva Ballkid is the experience of a lifetime on the world stage of tennis, supporting the best players, developing new skills and making new friends.
"The Australian Open has a reputation as having the best ballkids of all the Grand Slam events around the world. Each year, the ballkids join an elite group of young people, and some have gone on to become tennis champions themselves such as Pat Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt and more recently young Bernard Tomic."
Ball boys and girls will complete a number of selection trials and training sessions during 2009 in the lead up to the Australian Open 2010. They will be tested for their ball skills, hand-eye coordination, tennis knowledge and, most of all, their attitude towards such an important role.
The Aviva Ballkids have been proudly sponsored by Aviva, Australia's Life Company of the Year, since 2005. The Most Outstanding Aviva Ballkids award is presented to the ball boy and girl who have excelled in their duties, along with a A$1,000 cheque each.
The Aviva Ballkids will be in action during the Australian Open 2010, to be held from 18 to 31 January 2010.
