Safe drivers could save up to 20% on their comprehensive car insurance by using Aviva’s driver behavioural app which has launched on the Google Play app store following successful testing.

The ‘Aviva Drive’ app is the new easy way to save money on Aviva car insurance. The app uses smartphone technology to record a motorist’s driving style – covering their acceleration, braking and cornering. At 200 miles, the app will give the motorist an individual driving score, which will be used to calculate any personalised discount the motorist has earned – up to 20% off their Aviva premium. The discounts are in addition to any other Aviva offers for which they are eligible.*

The ‘Aviva Drive’ behavioural app is now available on android smartphones and is free to download from Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/apps or online from Aviva at www.aviva.co.uk/drive following a successful test phase which began in the summer.

Steve Treloar, Aviva’s retail director, said: “We’re really pleased with the test phase of ‘Aviva Drive’ and have been encouraged by the feedback we’ve received from motorists who used the app. To help make it even better, we’ve made a number of changes including giving motorists hints and tips on how to improve their driving, and the ability to share scores and badges using social media networks.

“As well as making some changes to the app itself, we’ve also changed the name – the app is now called ‘Aviva Drive’.

Even before the product was fully launched to market, a number of drivers have bought Aviva Drive insurance after their test data showed they were a safe driver.

One such driver is Sam Harrow, aged 23, who lives in Stevenage. He said: “I’ve only been driving for just under a year. I was looking around for a quote and saw a newspaper article for the Aviva driving app and as I was driving 200 miles that weekend to a family wedding, I thought I’d give it a go .

“My Aviva quote was already cheaper than my previous insurance but having completed the app, I got a score of 3.6 and a 10% discount. I’m now paying £600. The app was really easy to use and it was clear to see how it was monitoring my driving.”

Steve Treloar commented: “Sam’s story shows that Aviva Drive can benefit safer drivers regardless of age or gender.

“Our test phase also showed that the average driving score was 5.6 and that women are less likely to download and use the app than men. We would call on safer women drivers to try out the Aviva Drive app as we believe it could reduce their premiums which would be helpful, particularly with the EU Gender Directive coming in to force next month.

“And while safer drivers could receive a discount of up to 20%, we won’t penalise other drivers if their driving doesn’t come up to the standard set by the app. They’ll just receive the standard premium, but won’t get a discount.

“We believe that by using smartphone technology in this innovative way, Aviva will be able to tailor premiums further to individual drivers - basically the premium will be for you, not people like you.”

How much can drivers save?

Safer drivers could save up to 20% on their comprehensive car insurance, the discount will depend on the driving score and the premium paid:

Aviva Drive score Normal annual Aviva new customer price
  Under £200 £200 - £399 £400+
0 to 3.0 No additional saving available 0%
0%
3.1 to 7.0 5% 10%
7.1 to 10 10%
20%

Motorists with premiums below £200 will not get a discount as their claims history, type of car and driving experience suggest they are already amongst the safest drivers.
