...and Stephen Fry takes a bite.

Ahead of Norwich City Football Club’s match against Rotherham this weekend, club director and iconic TV chef, Delia Smith, took to the kitchen to bake a unique cake for a very special cause.

Delia swapped her team’s traditional yellow and green colours, and baked a cake with a twist. Not your average sponge, this seven-layered cake vibrantly resembled the colours of the rainbow, complete with lace decoration.

Commissioned by Aviva – Norwich City FC’s community partner – Delia’s special edition rainbow cake is in support of this year’s Rainbow Laces campaign, which champions LGBT inclusivity in all sports.

“Aviva and Norwich City Football Club are really proud to be involved in the Rainbow Laces campaign. We hope that everyone will come and have some fun and wear their laces on 1 December at Norwich versus Rotherham.”

Writer and actor, Stephen Fry, couldn’t resist getting a slice of the action – much to his own delight. He wrote on social media: “Oh Delia, the sacrifices one is prepared to make on behalf of an important cause.”  Fry’s message of support has so far received more than 1,200 ‘Likes’.

Pieces of the bespoke cake will be handed out to lucky supporters outside the Aviva Community Stand at Carrow Road before Norwich City’s clash with Rotherham United on Saturday, while Aviva will be handing out 5,000 pairs of Rainbow Laces to fans.

Beyond Norwich, thousands of fans and footballers up and down the country will be lacing up, as football clubs from the Premier League and Championship have pledged to support the Stonewall campaign. Across the two weekends of fixtures between 30 November and 5 December, there will be rainbow corner flags, captain’s armbands, ball plinths and more, to complement the rainbow laces on the pitch.

“We are delighted to be working with Delia Smith and our partners at Norwich City Football Club to champion the importance of LGBT inclusion within football.

As founder members of Stonewall’s TeamPride coalition, we are committed to once again support the fantastic Rainbow Laces campaign, which extends into the workplace through our Aviva Pride programme. With Delia’s fantastic support on board, it is set to be the tastiest campaign yet!”
